Ontario Assistive Device Program For Hearing Aids

The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) helps people with long-term physical disabilities pay for customized equipment, like wheelchairs and hearing aids. The healthcare initiative by the Government of Ontario is available to permanent Ontario residents with a valid health card who need hearing aids for at least six months, and it does not use income or age tests.

What Does ADP Cover For Hearing Aids?

ADP contributes 75% of the approved cost up to a maximum of 500 CAD for one hearing aid and 1,000 CAD for two hearing aids, and up to 1,350 CAD for a personal FM system used with hearing aids. The program funds commonly used styles of hearing aids, including behind‑the‑ear, in‑the‑ear, in‑the‑canal, and completely‑in‑the‑canal devices, as well as some basic accessories needed for daily use. Professional fees and optional accessories or services you choose to buy are not covered.

In simple words, ADP contributes 500 CAD towards the cost of the hearing aid. Considering the cost of the technology behind the device, the ADP coverage is generally exhausted at any purchase of hearing aids.

Am I Eligible for ADP?

To qualify for ADP hearing aid funding, you generally must: be an Ontario resident, hold a valid Ontario health card, have a documented long‑term hearing loss requiring hearing aids for at least six months, and obtain devices through ADP‑registered authorizers and vendors, such as Toronto Hearing Services.

Please note, ADP does not provide funding if you already receive or are eligible to receive coverage for the same device from WSIB or are a Group “A” veteran covered for that device by Veterans Affairs Canada.

How often ADP will fund hearing aids

For most adults, ADP funding toward hearing aids is available approximately once every five years, except in specific circumstances such as major changes in hearing or device failure outside warranty. ADP will generally not pay to replace a device that is lost, stolen, or damaged due to misuse during the standard funding period, so it is important to protect your hearing aids and follow care recommendations.

How to apply for ADP funding

Most people apply through an ADP‑authorized hearing clinic or audiology practice, which completes the assessment and application forms with you. Typical steps include:

(1) a comprehensive hearing assessment,

(2) discussion of appropriate hearing aid options,

(3) completion of ADP paperwork with an authorizer, such as audiologists at Toronto Hearing Services, and

(4) submission to ADP— Toronto Hearing Services do that for you directly, so you only pay your share.
